How to Prepare for a Trade Show
Midem is upon us again, with MidemNET starting on the 23rd and Midem itself kicking off on the 24th. No, that doesn't mean I am going to tell the story about when I fell down the stairs into the conference hall at Midem again (though, come on, that's a good story). What it DOES mean is that now is a good time to talk about how to prepare for a music industry trade show. You're going to have to part with a pretty penny to attend Midem or any other industry event, so you'll want to show up prepared to get the most bang for your buck. What does said preparation involve? For starters, do some recon before the event, so you know who is going to be there. Make appointments when possible and prepare the pitch you want to make. Put together any promos and marketing materials you may need to hand ...

Reader Question - When Is It Trade Show Time
Reader Lou asks the very timely question: I read your information about preparing for SXSW but I still don't know how I should know if I should go to things like this. I have played some shows and have recorded some songs. I want to do music as my job. Should I be going to all of these conventions? Answer:  For independent artists, the decision about whether or not to attend a trade show/convention comes down to one thing - money. It is important to look at not only if you have technically have the money in the bank to pay for the event but also what you will be diverting money from to pay for your attendance - and if what you get out of going to a trade show is at least as good as what you could have spent that money on. (Opportunity costs, my econ friends.) In other words - if you pay...

Should You Go Full Time?
Leaving aside the occasional Cinderella story, the reality for most musicians looks like this: juggle day job. Cram in practices and show.  Repeat. And then, it is start to happen...you start getting a little ahead of the curve financially with your music. Your shows are making some money, and maybe you are moving some merch or have even released some music that is selling. And you ask yourself - can I leave day job for dream job? Can I really be a full time musician? Well, you can. It all comes down to a little realistic planning. Tempting as it may be jump immediately, failing to build a good foundation for whatever you're doing in music usually has the same result: you end up two steps back because you don't have the plan or the resources to see it through. Imagine throwing caution to...

Work Permits for Musicians
SXSW is approaching, so it must be time to talk work permits (or work visas, if you like). Work permits can be a tricky topic for musicians. If you are traveling from abroad to play an event like SXSW or a music festival, then you will almost certainly be required to have a work permit before you take the stage. Sometimes the event organizers will arrange the work permits for you, but not always. You may have to take care of the paperwork yourself, which can require a significant time and financial investment on your part. Don't expect flexibility from large event organizers, however. They won't be letting you take the stage with a nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Doing so would open them up to serious consequences. They're not going to gamble their event on letting you play without the proper pa...
