Office Temperature and Productivity
From: About.com Career Planning
Office temperature is a real hot-button issue (pun entirely intended). A careerbuilder.com survey revealed that ten percent of workers report they have fought with a co-worker over the office temperature. One-third of workers say office temperature affects their productivity: 22% of workers surveyed said it is too difficult to concentrate if their work environment is too hot, while 11% said they can't concentrate if it's too cold. Office Romances
Valentine's Day is almost here and we are inundated with images of love and romance. You can hardly go anywhere without seeing glittering hearts and red roses. One might even say, "love is in the air" but that would be too much of a cliche. The one place love should not be, perhaps, is the office. When romance finds its way to work it can cause a host of problems, none of which will be beneficial to your career. While falling in love can be distracting all by itself, having the object of your affection nearby all day can make you forget all about your job. There are more reasons to avoid office romances. Read Why to Avoid an Office Romance to learn what they are. In an ideal world you wouldn't choose to start an office romance, but this isn't an ideal world, is it? Sometimes your emotion...

Is a Home Office Deduction Right for You?
It may seem that if you work from home, then you should qualify for a home office deduction on your income taxes. But hold on! The question of whether to take a home office deduction is a complicated one. The IRS has many requirements a taxpayer must meet before claiming a home office deduction. And complicating the issue even further is the important distinction the IRS makes regarding the home office deduction for telecommuting employees versus the self-employed...read more. Telecommuter Tales: How to Annoy a Telecommuter

As a telecommuter, are there a few things you'd like to tell your office co-workers? I know I have some. But as a freelancer that's never even met most of them in person, I've learned that if it doesn't directly affect the job, it's best to just keep my mouth shut. Most of my grievances are pretty minor anyway, like the first item on this list of things that annoy a telecommuter: going home for the day in mid conversation. What gets you? When working with a telecommuter, please don't __________. Fill in the blank with your own pet peeve. Telecommuter Tales: How to Annoy a Telecommuter originally appeared o...

Office Behaviors That Drive People Crazy
U.K.-based research firm Opinium recently surveyed 1,836 people on the most irritating behaviors typically encountered in an office environment. The resulting top 10 list included some usual suspects: things like "grumpy or moody colleagues" (37 percent), "small talk or gossip in the office" (19 percent) and "people speaking loudly on the phone" (18 percent). But what about complaints regarding "too much health and safety in the workplace" (16 percent)? I'm not exactly sure what this means, but maybe some of you could enlighten me if you have encountered problems in this area. Slow computers were quite high up on the list too – actually, that pet peeve came in second at 36 percent. You can imagine that this probably doesn't help the stress levels in the average IT department, which ...

Home Office Deductions Made Simple....Please
Last year legislators in both the Senate and House introduced bills that would simplify home office deductions. However, at this point, none of them have even made it out of committee. So nothing is likely to change for the 2009 tax year. But let's hope something happens for 2010 or beyond because the rules for a home office deduction are very complicated. In fact, they rules are so complicated that many people have trouble deciding if it's worth it to take the deduction. And then if you do take the deduction, you'll need to know which home office expenses qualify. But keep in mind that the rules differ for telecommuting employees and independent contractors. The home office deduction legislation would simplify the rules by allowing a standard deduction of perhaps $1,500 (though that numb...
