JobsOnTheMenu.com - Restaurant and Food Service Jobs
From: About.com Job Searching

Jobsonthemenu.com

The restaurant and retail industries are among the few industries that are starting to add jobs.  In January,  food stores added 14,000 positions, clothing stores 13,000 jobs, and general merchandise retailers 10,000 jobs.   In addition to adding jobs, hospitality and retail typically have a high turnover of employers - close to 100% a year, in some cases - so there are usually jobs available at many of the top employers.   These companies hire entry level candidates and are willing to train, so it's an opportunity to gain experience as well as a paycheck. For job seekers looking for restaurant employment, CareerBuilder.com has laun...

More Jobs in January

LinkUp

Job search engine LinkUp, which indexes jobs from over 20,000 company sites, reports that new job listings on company websites rose by 69,082 in January.  This is an increase of 18% from December.  Even though December is traditionally a bad month for new job listings, the report shows  progress in the right direction. This is good news for job seekers and a sharp contrast to LinkUp's dismal December report in which new and total job listings job search by 24% and 17% respectively. By the way, LinkUp is a terrific site for finding jobs direct from company websites.  Job seekers can search by keywords, job title, company, and/or location, to find jobs posted on company's own websit...

Seeking a Restaurant Job in a New City
Cammie writes: I’m relocating about a thousand miles away, and your article on cover letter FAQs is absolutely great! Just wanted to thank you. I followed all of your tips on cover letters to a T. I’m looking to fill a waitressing postion in Portland, OR. If you have any advice on how to land restaurant jobs, specifically key qualities they look for, that’d be greatly appreciated. The Career Doctor responds: Hiring for waitressing and other restaurant jobs tends to be a very face-to-face activity, so you may not have a lot of luck until you are in your new city. If you have a cover letter, you most likely have a resume. Not all candidates for serving positions will have a resume, so if you go from restaurant to restaurant dropping off resumes, you may have an advan...

Paying for Job Listings
The About.com Job Searching Forum has been inundated with posts (that have been deleted because they don't fit the standards for posting) offering free trials on job sites that charge job seekers for unadvertised job listings on company web sites. Regardless of what you read, it's important to be aware that job seekers don't have to pay to access listings from employer web sites. Despite sites advertising that you can get a job search edge by paying for job listings (over $200 a year on one site I looked at recently), job seekers don't need to pay to access job postings that are available elsewhere for free. I wrote about LinkUp the other day. LinkUp searches unadvertised jobs on employer web site and has many additional features for job seekers, as well. The job search engines Indeed.co...
