From: About.com Nonprofit Charitable Orgs
We don't yet know the full picture about charitable giving in 2009,
but Steve MacLaughlin, of Blackbaud, has some stats about online
giving for the year. Blackbaud closely tracks nonprofits that use
its online fundraising and CRM tools, enabling an early peek at
online trends throughout the year. Here are some online giving
stats and trends that Steve revealed today: Giving online is still
growing despite the economic climate. Revenue from online giving
grew 46% in 2009 when compared with 2008. The final three months of
2009 saw the most online revenue, accounting for 46% of the total.
December, alone, accounted for 30% of revenue and 18% of the volume
in number of transactions. The average gift online in December was
$244.17, a decrease of 2% from December 2008. However, online

Hopefully, you've been donating to the Haiti relief effort since
the horrific earthquake there on January 12. We certainly have had
a multitude of ways to do so, from sending a check to our favorite
charity, going online and giving to an organization on the ground
in Haiti, texting-to-give to a myriad of nonprofits, and responding
last night to the very moving telethon, Hope for Haiti Now. On
Friday, President Obama signed a bill that allows donors to Haiti
to take their charitable tax deductions on their 2009 tax returns.
As usual, you will need a receipt (canceled checks no longer serve)
from the charity to which you donated. There has been some

As we get ready for next year's fundraising campaigns, it is useful
to remember what giving should be all about. The Reverend Eric
Foley of the Transformational Giving blog writes about the

is simply a "financial transaction" and where "what changes hands

Should You Donate to International Causes?

Sandy Stonesifer, Slate columnist and charitable expert, recently
took on a similar question from a reader. She explores this
important donor decision in considerable depth and references a
number of good resources about international giving. My answer is
yes, do channel at least a portion of your charitable gifts
internationally, but with careful consideration of the
organizations that you decide to support. The best guide for me has
been the wisdom of Peter Singer, a bioethicist and author of The
Life You Can Save. Singer thinks that we all should be doing more
to help alleviate global poverty. Singer says that poverty has
already been reduce...
